Purpose refers to the reasons why one chooses to write or speak about an issue. Purpose may encompass many reasons but the individual will need to determine the main purpose they would want to focus on as this will guide the genre they use, the audience it will target as well as the design they choose for their work. When determining the purpose, the individual needs to understand their audiences’ expectations, their own reasons for doing a discourse as well as the main goal they wish to achieve through it, for instance entertaining or to respond to a social issue. When the purpose is clear, it becomes very easy to present the information one wants to pass across as well as to choose the most appropriate channel for it.
